Frequently Asked Questions - MMTA Exams

Q: Do I need to send a self-addressed, stamped envlope with my student(s)' registrations?
A: No.

Q: If I am registering a student for the Comprehensive Piano Exam, do I also need to register them for the Keyboard Skills and Sightplaying exams?
A: No. Comprehensive Piano Exam registration automatically includes Keyboard Skills and Sightplaying.

Q: If my student has taken Keyboard Skills and/or Sightplaying before the Comprehensive Piano Exam, will they still be tested on those things at their piano exam?
A: No, as long as you've indicated on their registration form they have taken these tests, and as long they have passed these tests. Include the score sheet from both/either exam when submitting the student's piano exam registration, then deduct $2 from the comprehensive exam fee for each test passed.
Q: My student will be taking the Comprehensive Piano Exam, but wants to take the Keyboard Skills and/or Sightplaying on a different day. However, the piano exam registration is due before date of their other exam(s) has passed. Since I won't have a scoresheet yet to include with their piano exam registration form, what do I do?
A: After the student has taken their other exam(s), mail a copy of the scoresheet to the Site Administrator for the site where the student will take their piano exam.

Q: My student will be taking an upper-level Comprehensive Piano Exam, but won't be taking the required Theory Exam until after the piano exam registration is due. What do I do?
A: Once the student has taken/passed the theory exam, send a copy of the score sheet to the Site Administrator for the site where the student will take their piano exam. If you don't receive the theory score sheet until after the piano exam, send a copy of both theory and piano exam score sheets to the Piano Exam Program Director to obtain the student's comprehensive piano exam certificate.

Q: Can a student take a piano exam even though they haven't passed the required theory level and/or have no intension of doing so?
A: Yes. However, the student will receive a small, performance-only certificate. They will not receive the large, comprehensive certificate until they have achieved the required theory level.

Q: My student will be taking an upper-level Comprehensive Piano Exam, but cannot find his/her most-recent theory exam certificate. What should they do?
A: Send a request for a duplicate theory certificate, along with $5, to the Theory Program Director. If the student has already taken their piano exam before the duplicate certificate arrives, send a copy of the theory certificate to the Piano Exam Program Director.
Q: May my student take both the Comprehensive Piano Exam and the required Theory level exam on the same day?
A: Yes. However, the student will receive a performance-only certificate for their piano exam. For a comprehensive certificate, mail a copy of the student's theory exam score sheet and certificate to the Piano Exam Program Director. If the student does not, for whatever reason, pass the theory exam, the student will not be able to receive their comprehensive certificate until the theory exam is passed.

Q: My student needs to request a different time for their exam. What do I do?
A: Contact the Site Administrator for the site where the student will take their exam. The Site Administrator will then tell you if it possible to change times or not. (Fees may apply.)
Q: My student is unable to attend their scheduled exam. What do I do?
A: First, contact the Site Administrator to let them know the student will be absent. If/when the student wishes to reschedule the exam, send a registration form to the MMTA Office as usual, along with the appropriate fee. Contact the Vice President of Education or Vice President of Vocal/Instrumental Programs with questions or concerns, or for more information.
Q: My son/daughter is unable to attend their scheduled exam. What do I do?
A: Contact your student's teacher. If your teacher is unavailable and it is a last-minute situation, contact the MMTA Office to say your student will not be at their exam.

Q: Is it possible for my student to skip a level of an exam?
A: Yes. For theory exams, it is the recommendation of the Theory Committee students begin with Level 1 and progress from there; but understand if a student skips Level 1 because it is too easy and proceeds directly to Level 2. For piano exams, it is possible to skip a level as the student's ability allows and the necessary theory requirement has been met.
Q: Will I receive confirmation the registrations I've submitted to the MMTA Office have been received?
A: If students have been registered online, you will receive an email receipt. No receipt or confirmation will be given for registrations mailed or hand-delivered. The student's admission slip mailed to you from the Site Administrator before the exam date will be your only confirmation.

Q: I registered (a) student(s) for exam(s) but haven't receive their exam time yet. What do I do?
A: If it more than 10 days before the exam, watch your mail for an envelope from the Site Administrator. If it less than a week before the exam, contact the Site Administrator to confirm the student has been registered and for exam information.
Q: I am not a member of MMTA but would like to have my student(s) take an MMTA exam. Is this possible?
A: Yes. However, extra fees do apply. For Comprehensive Piano, Keyboard Skills, Sightplaying and Theory exams, add an extra $125 (per group of registrations). For Flute, Organ and Violin exams, add $15 to the fee for each student registered.

Q: Does MMTA have workbooks and other materials availble to help students prepare for exams? If so, what are they? Are any required? Where do I buy them?
A: MMTA has a variety of materials for sale to assist teachers and students when preparing for exams. Visit the MMTA Materials page on this website for a list of available products, including descriptions for each. Materials may be ordered online with a Visa or Mastercard, or from the MMTA Office. Syllabi are necessary to make sure students are properly prepared to pass their MMTA exams.

Q: I received a pink slip and/or yellow slip concerning my student(s)' registration. What do I do?
A: A pink or yellow slip indicates something was missing and/or incorrect on your student(s)' registration form(s). Correct the problem, then send any requested items to the MMTA Office or the Site Administrator - the sheet will tell you which to send things to.
