Dear Mentor,
Thank you for making yourself available to do this important job. It is MMTA’s hope that by mentoring new members, they will feel welcomed by the organization and enthusiastic about participating in its many opportunities.
Some suggestions for developing a successful mentoring relationship:
-
Contact the new member within one week. Discuss inform, and encourage participation in MMTA programs and opportunities available to students and teachers.
-
Determine which areas are of most interest to the new member. Discuss the calendar dates applicable to each area and suggest ways to get started.
-
Help the new member prepare a student for an exam, contest, or other program. For example, walk through the paperwork required, discuss registration deadlines and fees, review the syllabus and/or contest list, etc.
-
Introduce the new member to the nearest local association and/or the closest district members. Invite and/or accompany the new member to a MMTA workshop, meeting or convention.
-
Suggest entry-level volunteer positions to help the new member become familiar with MMTA programs.
-
Answer questions as you are able. If necessary, refer the new member to an appropriate person for help.
-
Record mentor activities over the course of a year. Return the Mentor Record form to the Mentor Chair when you feel your mentoring has been completed.
Thank you very much for participating in MMTA’s Mentor Program!
Sincerely,
Barbara Wanquist , NCTM
