About MMTA

The Minnesota Music Teachers Association, founded in 1901, is a professional non-profit educational organization and is affiliated with the Music Teachers National Association, founded in 1876. Our mission is to advance the profession of music teaching through education, certification, networking, and advocacy.

MMTA members are committed to the highest standards of music teaching and are dedicated to upholding and improving the standards of all music education in Minnesota.

MMTA offers

  • programs for students and teachers, including contests and comprehensive examinations for piano, voice and other instruments; composition contests for both students and teachers; ensemble festivals and other programs designed to nurture and inspire the developing musician
  • syllabi and teaching materials that support students as they learn repertoire, music history, theory and sightplaying skills
  • publications, including a bi-monthly newsletter, the annual calendar listing events and program entry rules, and a directory of members
  • MMTA Convention, an annual event that offers a rich variety of presentations on pedagogy and performance and features guest artists and concerts
  • a mentoring program to help new members become acquainted with programs and procedures
  • many opportunities for a teacher’s own continuing education
  • a network of local associations throughout the state where members can meet for collegiality and support

A member of MMTA also becomes a member of Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).

Founded in 1876, MTNA is a community of committed music professionals which offers to its members a variety of programs, services and benefits, including:

  • American Music Teacher, an award-winning bi-monthly journal containing features on various topics of importance to the music teaching profession
  • a national convention, held annually, offering opportunities for education and networking
  • a national certification program, providing a path to recognition and promotion of the highest standards of music teaching
  • a variety of financial services not otherwise available to the independent teacher, including health insurance and retirement savings options
  • a blanket music licensing agreement with ASCAP
  • a national job placement service
  • a national performance and composition competition for students

A new member need only be active in teaching music to join MMTA. No one is required to take a test on their music ability, but every five years each certified member must show evidence of continuing education.

MMTA staffs a central office located on the lower level of the Schmitt Music store at the Galleria in Edina. Feel free to drop by during office hours (10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays) to learn more about MMTA or to browse or purchase MMTA teaching materials.
