MMTA Convention Master Class: Voice

Two vocal master classes will be held, one each on Monday, June 12, and Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at the Minnesota Music Teachers Association annual convention at the Hilton-MSP Airport in Bloomington.

Our clinician this year is Christine BassWith 47 years of teaching experience, both in the private voice studio and with choral ensembles, Christine is a former director of Temple University Men’s and Women’s Choruses and Assistant Professor of Music Education, previously DCA at Cherry Hill West high school where her program grew from 60 to over 320 students in seven choirs. As a private voice instructor, her students have gone on to countless universities and performing in local and national opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera House, Kennedy Center Opera House, Washington National Opera, Summer Garden Opera, Harlem Opera Theater, as well as on Broadway. Several of her students have toured internationally and have gone on to become vocal instructors themselves. Christine taught choral conducting at Rowan University. Her ensembles have performed at multiple ACDA National Conventions, MENC and ACDA All Eastern Conventions, and with Alan Gilbert, Julius Rudel, Rossen Milanov, Philadelphia’s Singing City, Sister Cities Girlchoir and the Newark Boy’s Choir.  Her men’s a cappella group, Men of Note, won three consecutive National Championships for Best of High School A Cappella.

Christine earned her degrees from Westminster Choir College, studied conducting under Robert Simpson, Elaine Brown, Andrew Megill and Joseph Flummerfelt and was a member of the Westminster Choir.  She received their Alumni Merit Award and Alumni Ambassador Award. Christine was a New Jersey MENC Master Music Teacher and received the Governor's Award in Arts Education.  Christine has conducted numerous All State and Honors Choirs including the 2009 ACDA All National High School Honors Choir.  She is a guest conductor, adjudicator and clinician presenting workshops across the country and internationally. APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Students of MMTA members are invited to apply.  There will be a master class for high school-aged students, as well as a master class for college-aged and older adult students.
  2. There is no application fee.
  3. Please apply online (see below).
  4. A video audition must be submitted with the application.
  5. The repertoire selection must be no more than 7 minutes in length.
  6. The same composition must be used in the master class itself.
  7. The composition must be memorized for the master class, but does NOT have to be memorized for the video audition.
  8. All applicants will be asked to submit a photo and bio for the master class program, and to sign a media release.  Teachers completing the online application should retain a copy of the media release signed by the student or parent/guardian.
