MMTA Convention Master Class: Jazz and Popular Piano

A jazz and popular piano master class will be held on Monday, June 8, 2020, at 3:15 p.m. at the Minnesota Music Teachers Association annual convention at the DoubleTree hotel in St. Louis Park.

Our clinician this year is Sarah Burk. A performer and recording artist on piano, keyboards, violin, vocals and percussion, Sarah Burk has toured the U.S., Europe and the Middle East.  Sarah’s degrees from the University of Minnesota include a B.M. in theory/composition with a jazz studies minor, and a Master of Liberal Studies. She has also studied Latin jazz piano with Nachito Herrera and Afro-Caribbean percussion with Shai Hayo. Sarah is currently Instructor of Jazz Piano at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.  She also served as a consultant in the development of MMTA’s popular styles curriculum.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Students of MMTA members, as well as MMTA members themselves, are invited to apply.
  2. There is no application fee.
  3. If possible please apply online (see below) otherwise see the main convention page for the print application.
  4. A video audition of a popular song or jazz tune, arranged for solo piano, must be submitted with the application.
    - No other instrumentation may appear in the video – solo piano only for this master class.)
    - Arrangement may be fully written out, written out and embellished/altered, created from a lead sheet, or created completely by ear with no sheet music of any kind.
  5. The piece must be no more than 7 minutes in length.
  6. The same piece must be used in the master class itself.
  7. The piece must be memorized for the master class, but does NOT have to be memorized for the video audition.
  8. Applications are due Friday, April 1.
  9. Selections will be made and applicants notified by April 20. 
  10. Three applicants will be selected to perform, along with one alternate. 
  11. Performers will pay a $25.00 participation fee.

Performers and alternates will be asked to submit a photo and bio for the master class program, and to sign a media release.  Teachers completing the online application should retain a copy of the media release signed by the student or parent/guardian.
